Stinky Joins Rumps Protest

Date: 06 December 2002

The CFMEU's giant rat, Stinky, will be at Manly today, supporting three African chefs in their battle for more than $100,000 in owed wages.

The Rat, which intrigued Counsel Assisting the Building Industry Royal Commission, will attend a Labor Council-organised picket drawing attention to the plight of immigrant workers brought to Australia on shonky visas.

Labor Council is calling on the Federal Government to tighten up visa processing procedures in the wake of evidence suggesting they are being abused by unscrupulous employers.

So far this year, unions have gone in to bat for immigrants from India, South Africa and Serbia, being paid as little as $50 a week after being brought to Australia, under Section 456 visas, by "sponsoring" employers.

Their current focus is on three chefs, employed by Manly eatery Ribs and Rumps, who have six-figure claims before the chief industrial magistrate.

The Labor Council picket at South Steyne, near the end of the Manly Corso will begin at 12 noon.
