Police Operations Centre Dispute Vic

Date: 11 December 2002

INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE COMMENCES-POLICE DESPATCH CENTRE MELBOURNE.
The members of the CEPU employed at the Victoria Police Despatch Centre (VPC) formerly known as Intergraph, and who work for emergency communications have voted to begin an industrial campaign over their enterprise bargaining claims

The dispute is over an interim settlement to the unions EBA claims and has come about because little progress is being made in negotiations, and because the state government appears to expect that their workers will continue to work around the clock in a high pressure, stressful, anxiety ridden job without penalty rates and other conditions considered normal elsewhere.

'Between the employer (ECV), the government bureaucrats, and the Victorian Cabinet, no one seems capable or prepared to make a decision' says Len Cooper State Secretary of the Communications Union CEPU.

Our members gave the powers that be until 5 PM on Wednesday the 11th of December 2002 to make a satisfactory offer or they will begin industrial action on Thursday 12 December 2002. The demand was not responded to. The issue at the centre of the dispute is that these twelve hour shift workers receive no penalty payments for the unsociable hours that they work in this 24 hour, 7 day per week centre.

'The current planned action will not be allowed to endanger the life and limb of the public or the operational police but it will be designed to have maximum impact on the decision makers', says Len Cooper.

The vote for action was almost unanimous; the ECV employees are extremely angry.
