Building Workers Say No To GrolloDate: 19 December 2002
The VTHC welcomes the decision by building and construction workers to overwhelmingly reject the Grollo company's anti-union enterprise agreement. Workers voted three-to-one in a secret ballot to reject pressure from the company to undermine their hard won rights and conditions. VTHC secretary Leigh Hubbard said it was time for the company to accept the legitimate role of the union and begin genuine negotiations with the CFMEU. "The Grocon workers have spoken and they have sent a very clear message to the company that they prefer to negotiate working conditions through their union." "This is an important victory for all workers in Victoria. Federal Workplace Relations Minister Tony Abbot's attempt to interfere in industrial relations in this state has suffered a decisive blow today. Mr Abbott and Daniel Grocon should now accept that workers want to be represented by their union." Mr Hubbard said the decision paved the way for the company and union to sit down and negotiate a long period of industrial peace on Grocon sites around the state. "The Grollo company can now stop listening to the hollow promises of Tony Abbott and continue to build the state or they can invite further industrial unrest. The ball is in their court."
