PSA wins improved school staffingDate: 19 December 2002
The Public Service Association of NSW has reached an interim agreement with the Department of Education and Training for more school administrative staff in all schools. The small primary schools have been given an extra staff day per week. All other schools have been given 3 hours per week. These are interim increases pending the outcome of the review of Senior School Assistant and School Assistant classifications. The review is a joint PSA/DET project. The extra staff does not meet the PSA's estimate of requirements - it is just a start. "It has taken a while to get this first improvement. We are now optimistic that the review will move along at good speed," says PSA President Sue Walsh. "The school staff were informed this morning and the news has been well received. "Over the last few years the amount of work required of school staff has increased substantially. Staff numbers have not kept pace. The Department has finally acknowledged this", she said As a consequence of the interim agreement the bans, some of which have been operating for the last 10 weeks or more, have been lifted, and the Sky Channel meetings and proposed strike next term have been cancelled.
