Cool heads prevail in Casino dispute

Date: 10 January 2003

LHMU Casino Union members will meet with Crown Casino management on Monday - with the strong expectation of improved offers from the company, the LHMU Casino Union's Connie De Nino said today.

" All delegates will meet today to discuss our options following a decision not to take stop work action this weekend," Connie De Nino said.

" In response to our notices for industrial action for this weekend Crown applied to the Federal court for an injunction seeking to stop us from going ahead with our plans.

" Crown took the threat of industrial action so seriously that they wanted the courts to intervene on their behalf. Their documentation to the court outlines exactly how effective last Friday's industrial action had been - and it showed clearly they did not want to go through that again.

" After some legal argy-bargy we have agreed to lift our notices of industrial action this weekend so that Crown will recommence talks on Monday.

" Both parties have said that it is in all our interests to resolve this situation quickly.

"Our members hope to see real progress at our meeting on Monday with the company.

" Key issues to discuss include the entry level salary structure, and the wage increase which Crown have said they will negotiate on.

" If significant progress is not made then the LHMU Casino Union will submit new notices of industrial action after Monday's meeting," Connie De Nino said.

The LHMU proudly represents around 130,000 hard working women and men throughout Australia
