5000 March in Wollongong Againt WarDate: 09 February 2003
An estimated 5000 people marched through the streets of Wollongong on Saturday 8 February to demonstrate their opposition to war against Iraq and Australian involvement. They came from different backgrounds. Unionists, business people, students, pensioners and concerned citizens. They all had one thing in common, their opposition to war and Australia being dragged into the conflict. The rally was addressed by several speakers including the Most Rev. Peter Ingham, Bishop of Wollongong and John Maitland, National Secretary of the CFMEU. Arthur Rorris, South Coast Labour Council Secretary said, "We were hoping for one thousand and we ended up with the biggest peace rally in Wollongong this side of the Second World War. "It was amazing to see shoppers in the mall run out and join the march as it proceeded through to the amphitheatre. "Some people said they had never been in a demonstration before but felt strongly about this issue. "One recurring theme of the march and rally was that Australian troops should be defending Australia, not American oil companies.
