No Olympic Deal Struck YetDate: 30 May 2000
NSW Labor Council secretary Michael Costa today welcomed reports the government was negotiating an Olympic allowance for public sector workers whose working conditions would be affected by the Olympics. But he said no agreement had been reached yet as there had been no formal offer from the government. "I await the government's formal offer and will then refer this to relevant affiliates for their consideration," Mr Costa said. He also rejected reports that the trade union movement had breached earlier undertakings by seeking the Olympics allowance. "As the government knows, the union promised that they would not use the Olympics to seek a general pay rise. "The application for an allowance for public servants whose work is directly effected by the Games is a totally different issue." Mr Costa also called on transport authorities to enter meaningful negotiations over rail and bus workers' separate claim in light off the special impact the Games would have on their work.
