Vic Librarians Are Lowest PaidDate: 26 February 2003
Members of the Community and Public Sector Union from the State Library of Victoria marched on Parliament today demanding wage justice. More than 150 State Library workers marched to Parliament House today (26 February) to demand wage justice from the State government. Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) State Library delegate Jill Sparrow said that the dispute was about wage justice. "Our librarians are the lowest paid in the State. Staff in council, school and university libraries all receive higher salaries than State Library staff." Ms Sparrow said the union rejected the State government offer of 3 per cent as unacceptable. "The 3 per cent pay offer doesn't address the parity issue. We are asking the government for 6 per cent because that is what we need to begin to bring us into line with other librarians in the state." The dispute has been running since December and CPSU members are determined to win their struggle for wage justice Ms Sparrow said. "We recently held a 48-hour strike. It is not every day that librarians go on strike but the salaries at this library are pitiful and we believe our claim is reasonable." Other unionists and members of the public can support the campaign by signing a petition at the union stall in front of the State Library. Union members will voice their concerns to the hundreds of people expected to attend the opening of the Ned Kelly exhibition at the Library tomorrow night.
