PSA extends bans in Police Service

Date: 08 March 2000

The PSA today extended work bans to cover all unoccupied postions following requests from members. Yesterday bans were imposed on the Rosters and Exhibit functions.

The bans result from of the sheer frustration members are experiencing with the senior police officers supposedly running the Police Service.

Management confusion has led to a large number of administrative positions being left vacant and an expectation that the work will be carried out by remaining staff.

Greg O'Donohue, PSA Senior Industrial Officer, said, "Our members have been promised that positions would be filled and additional positions created through civilianisation, which should lead to better career opportunities for our members. Our members have worked in extreme conditions on the expectation that things would get better. Their goodwill is now exhausted".

"It is our members who continually pay the price for inefficient management in the Police Service".

There are approximately 250 employees who will be without jobs once the Infringement Processing Bureau moves to Maitland and Firearms Registry move to Murwillumbah.

The simple process of redeploying these people into existing vacancies seems too difficult for senior management.

Mr O'Donohue added, "The Government should seriously consider the value of having senior police officers burdened with financial and administrative management within the Police Service when clearly they could be more efficiently and effectively employed as "real police".

"A simple return to the old Police Department/Police Force structure may be appropriate. It would allow senior police to concentrate on the areas in which they have expertise, such as crime control and investigation".
