Peace Coalition Calls Oscars Boycott

Date: 24 March 2003

The Walk Against the War Coalition today called on all Australians opposed to the War in Iraq not to tune in to Monday's night's coverage of the Academy Awards.

Walk Against the War Coalition spokesman Bruce Childs said the Oscars boycott was a simple way people could show their concern at the way in which the Bush Administration had bypassed the United Nations to invade Iraq.

The boycott call was delivered to today's Sydney peace rally attended by more than 50,000 people.

"By switching off your televisions on Monday night you will be sending a message to the White House that you do not embrace this US," Mr Childs said.

"Already, several Hollywood figures have pulled out the Oscars in a show of Opposition to the War.

"By reducing the ratings of the Oscars we can show them that Australians support their stand and send a message to our own government that, while we support our troops, we do not support the Prime Minister's decision to send them into Iraq."
