Fiji TUC to business lobby: Butt Out

Date: 01 June 2000

PRESS RELEASE

Fiji TUC tells Business Lobby to talk to G.Speight about the hostages rather than campaign to lift Australian bans

Fiji Trades Union Congress is aware of the recent moves by the
representatives of Fiji-Australia Business Council Mr Ross Porter, maybe campaigning to uplift the bans by Australian and International Trade Unions on Fiji on the pretext that there will be losses of jobs and other financial related losses which the workers will have to bear.

We understand this lobby is being addressed for the garment manufacturers whose only interest at this time is to remain in business as usual. They do not understand the intricacies of what citizens of Fiji are facing at this difficult hour.

In the current situation with the martial law in place the Fiji-Australia Business Council and Mr Porter is advised to speak to Mr G. Speight and the thugs to release the hostages and return Fiji to parliamentary democracy and the reinstatement of the 1997 Constitution

Mr Porter living in the comfort of environment of Australia must understand the situation in Fiji
