May Day Alliance Targets Health CareDate: 30 April 2003
Unions, community groups and charities will mark May Day by joining forces to campaign against the Howard Government's planned destruction of Medicare The Save Medicare Alliance has been formed to give voice to widespread community anger at Federal Government plans to end bulk billing and force ordinary people into often inadequate and costly private health funds. "It is our hope that with a strong community focused campaign the Save Medicare Alliance will shore up parliamentary support for the fundamental principles of Medicare and ensure a fair equitable and universal health care system for all Australians," spokesperson Shane O'Brien said today. "The package announced by the Federal Government is not about providing affordable health care in Australia. Once again this Government is forcing us down the American road towards a two tier health care system." The Save Medicare Alliance will be formally launched at a Press Conference to be held tomorrow, Thursday 1st May at 10am in the Courtyard of Sydney Hospital The Alliance's first public event will be a public rally next Thursday, May 8. Speakers at the rally include Dr Con Costa (Doctors Reform Society), Stephen Smith (ALP spokesperson on Health), Senator Kerry Nettle (Greens), Arthur Chesterfield Evans MLC (Australian Democrats), Dr John Falzon (St Vincent de Paul) and a representative from the ACTU.
