FSU SOS Tour at ALP State ConferenceDate: 09 June 2000
The Finance Sector Union's Bank Rescue Vehicle is going to the ALP NSW Branch Annual Conference this weekend as part of its national "S.O.S" Tour. Backed by NSW Fair Trading Minister, John Watkins, the "S.O.S" Tour is aimed at urging local communities to help pressure the Federal Government to 'Save Our Staff' and 'Save Our Service' in the banking sector. "We are sending the ambulance to ALP State Conference to urge the Labor Party to actively support our call for a Charter of social obligations for the banking industry. We will be distributing petitions and asking Conference to formally support our campaign." said Geoff Derrick of the Finance Sector Union. The Ambulance will arrive in Town Hall Square on Saturday 10 June, at 11.30 am and stay until 12.30 p.m. "We will be encouraging state and Federal politicians in attendance at Conference to familiarise themselves with our rescue vehicle and rescue mission."Mr Derrick said. "With Westpac cutting 4000 jobs and the Commonwealth Bank's takeover of Colonial predicted to cost at least another 2500 jobs, it was time to call an ambulance, and that's what we have done."
