Schools GST dispute settledDate: 19 July 2000
The dispute over staff funding for extra work created by the GST was settled last night. The Department of Education and Training (DET) has agreed that additional funding will be made available if required. ($2 million has already been allocated for extra staff hours.) The extra GST work will be carried out by School Assistants, mostly the full-time Senior School Assistants. The extra work will be done by current staff doing extra work (extra hours for part-timers, perhaps overtime for full-timers) or casual clerical relief staff. For the first time paid overtime will be available to School Assistants. The initial allocation was spread over Terms 3 and 4 for the 2200 schools throughout the state. Schools can now spend all of their allocation in term 3 if need be. The requirement for extra funding will be subject to a joint PSA-DET monitoring process. The first round of monitoring will be near the end of Term 3. The settlement was made following representations by the PSA to the Minister, John Aquilina.
