DETYA staff reject unfair dealDate: 26 July 2000
Staff at the Department of Education Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) have overwhelmingly supported a CPSU campaign to reject a management enterprise agreement proposal. According to AEC figures, 68.4% of staff voted to reject the agreement. Voter turnout was around 72%. In a sometime tense campaign, CPSU urged members to reject the agreement and demand a better deal. Among concerns with the agreement were; CPSU Section Secretary, Jenness Gardner, said, "Staff have made their opinion on this shoddy agreement crystal clear. We are calling on management to return to the table and start negotiating realistically". "This whole campaign has been quite empowering for DETYA staff, many of whom have not participated in industrial campaigns before. It has shown what can be achieved when workers stick together. It has also shown that staff believe our claim is reasonable, achievable and worth fighting for. The ball is now in management's court. They can choose to listen to the views of staff and make a fair deal, or they can continue to bury their head in the sand." For Comment:
