Hold Up Leads to Union Action at MBF

Date: 26 October 2000

The Australian Services Union (Clerical & Admin) has called for urgent action to increase security measures in MBF Offices following another robbery involving MBF Staff members yesterday.

ASU Branch Secretary Michael Want has called for a tightening of security following the incident at the Chatswood Office of MBF yesterday morning. "According to a witness who was in the Office at the time, a man lept from the queue and grabbed the staff member from behind. He then forced her to empty her till," said Michael Want.
Michael Want believes it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt. "Fortunately, yesterday the offender was unarmed and no-one was seriously hurt, however there have been several incidences in the past where the offenders have been armed," said Mr Want. "We do not want to get smart in hindsight - the ASU wants something done now, before it's too late."
"The MBF staff member who was grabbed yesterday should not be exposed to this sort of danger. MBF have a duty under the Occupational Health and Safety Act to provide a safe working environment - they are clearly failing in this duty of care unless they act quickly to install security measures such as security screens in all MBF Offices. Presently, they do not even have security cameras installed."
Mr Want said the ASU will commence a campaign to have security increased in MBF Offices and will be pursuing the campaign vigorously. "We will do whatever is necessary to ensure that our members have a safe working environment," concluded Mr Want.
For further information please ring ASU Branch Secretary Michael Want on 9265 8211 or 0418 589 919.
