ABC STAFF REBEL AGAINST SHIER

Date: 27 October 2000

Quentin Dempster in Sydney

Quentin Dempster in Sydney

In most ABC workplaces around the nation, staff
members today met to consider the Managing Director's address given to staff.
At today's meeting staff voted overwhelmingly in favour to kick-off a public campaign
to gain support in defending the ABC against any cuts to news and current affairs.

ABC staff also demanded the Managing Director and all Directors meet with staff to allow questioning of the Directors about; the details of the new structure; and an explanation of the cuts and how cuts are proposed to be implemented. A deadline of 24 November was proposed.

Most of staff resolved to reconvene meetings to consider further action if the Managing Director failed to meet again before the date.

The sentiment expressed at most meetings showed that staff had lost confidence in the Managing Director's ability to articulate his vision of the ABC's future clearly.

Members from all quarters of the ABC joined forces to express their concern over the Managing Director's lack of knowledge about the operations of programs, the structure of departments and failure to consult experienced program makers prior to making his decisions.

And what about asking the Australian public what programs should be provided on their national broadcaster?

A range of speakers from all sections including radio, television and multimedia aired their concerns over the lack of detail provided by Mr Shier about his proposals for funding.
