ABC Response Sparks Further ActionDate: 17 March 2000
On Wednesday ABC journalists rallied together to prove they have had enough of ABC's management's failure to reach a fair staff agreement. The industrial action had an impact on JJJ news, Radio National programs, Current Affairs AM and PM, radio news bulletins, in some states local morning and afternoon programs, the Lateline program, the 7.30 report and TV news services. The action was deliberately taken before the new Managing Director, Mr Jonathon Shier, started at the ABC. This was deemed necessary so there was no mistaking the industrial action taken was in relation to the current Enterprise process. Ever since a ballot, held before Christmas, where ABC employees voted against a non-union agreement, management have attempted to wear staff down by refusing to shift during negotiations. The current management proposals, if effective until December 2002, offer employees an average of 2.2 per cent each year over a total period. The MEAA has again approached management to reconsider its current position. Alliance delegates will meet again on today to report on the results of Wednesday's action and make further plans based on ABC management's response.
