BHP Agrees to Negotiate with UnionsDate: 20 March 2000
BHP and the unions under the leadership of the ACTU are negotiating a Collective Agreement for BHP's operations in the Pilabra. BHP today offered a Collective Agreement which would cover the 55% of union members who have not signed an individual agreement. While not accepting this offer today, the ACTU has said that significant progress has been made on union representation rights, although this issue is yet to be fully resolved. BHP is seeking to introduce significant change to its operations with the introduction of annualised salaries and workplace flexibility. The ACTU said there was still significant disagreement about the safeguards necessary for such change. The parties have agreed to meet again in the Pilabra in two weeks time.
