Hotel Workers meet Greg CombetDate: 20 March 2000
This Wednesday (22 March) hundreds of hotel workers are meeting ACTU Secretary Greg Combet, and are planning to watch the Living Wage Case at the Industrial Relations Commission. The hotel workers are holding a rally at Scots Church Hall in Melbourne. Their intention is for Australian executives and the federal government to understand that they more than deserve the $24 pay rise they are asking for from the Industrial Relations Commission. Hotel workers are amongst the hundreds of thousands of Australian families that are waiting for the conclusion of the Living Wage Case. The Federal Government is offering $8; whilst Australian companies represented by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) are arguing that low paid Australians should not receive a wage rise at all. This is despite Australian executives receiving average pay rises of 22%; and politicians a pay rise of 10% The hotel workers are meeting at : Scots Church Hall, corner of Collins and Russell at 9am. Greg Combet will be speaking to the hotel employees at about 9.30 am, he will be joined by hotel employees who will address their colleagues. If you are Melbourne on Wednesday, please feel free to come and support the hotel workers.
