National leaders pledge support

Date: 23 March 2000

The National Secretary of the CFMEU, Mr John Sutton, will today present a cheque to the CFMEU Victorian Branch to assist workers who have been locked out during the 36 hour campaign.
Mr Sutton will be joined by ACTU Secretary, Greg Combet, who will also pledge ACTU support for the workers in Victoria fighting for the campaign.

Mr Sutton said the Victorian Branch's campaign for shorter hours was about setting new community standards and that working hours were an increasingly important issue for workers and their families.
"The CFMEU and our members have always been at the forefront of campaigns to win improved conditions for workers. Our members fight hard to win improvements that flow new standards to other industries and other workers.
"This is what happened with Superannuation, Portable Long Service Leave and Redundancy. And we believe the same will happen with shorter hours," said Mr Sutton.
Mr Sutton said the National CFMEU fully supported the Victorian Branch and that the outcome of the campaign was sure to flow to other States over time.
ACTU Secretary Greg Combet will attend the media conference to express the ACTU's support for the locked-out workers and the Union's campaign.
Details will also be announced about the CFMEU's family picnic day in support of the locked-out workers.
