Wentworth Hotel workers sacked

Date: 05 February 2001

HOTEL WORKERS SACKED SO WENTWORTH HOTEL CAN BE SOLD

LHMU Hotel Union members will rally in front of the Wentworth Hotel tomorrow morning to protest a mass sacking decision by the company - just so the sale of the hotel can be completed.

" It seems a key condition of the $108 million dollar sale of the 431 room grand Wentworth Hotel was that management sack one in twenty of their employees," Mark Boyd, the LHMU Hotel Union Assistant Secretary, said today.

" The total immorality of this condition of sale is breath-taking. Our members are being told that if AXA is to make its sale they have to lose their jobs."

Union members will rally at 9am tomorrow ( February 6) at the Phillip St entrance to the Wentworth Hotel to protest the sackings.

" Millions of dollars will change hands when the finance company AXA (formerly National Mutual) sells this Sydney icon to a property company . "

AXA announced in June 2000 that they wanted to sell the Wentworth Hotel - which is managed by the Rydges group - to reduce direct property holdings from their statutory funds, in a bid to make the funds more liquid.

" With the aura of the Olympics surrounding all Sydney hotels, and the hard work of our members during the Sydney Olympics, AXA was able to maximise their profits from the sale," Mark Boyd said.

" Now Hotel workers are being repaid for their hard work with this announcement of job losses. Twenty LHMU members were called in today and told to pack their bags - and they were told they were being sacked because the new owners have made it a condition of purchase.

" One of the workers who is losing his job just so AXA can make money from the sale has worked at the Wentworth Hotel for 34 years; another has worked for the Wentworth Hotel for twenty-six years. "
