Timber Workers Strike Over SackingDate: 25 February 2000
Workers at a Western Sydney timber company are staging a picket after their union delegate was sacked for raising safety concerns. CFMEU Forestry Division Adam Lincoln says the delegate 15 workers were on the picket line outside John M Fraser Pty ltd at Toongabbie in response to the dismissal of delegate Bevan McMullan. Lincoln says the action came after repeated complaints about safety issues over the past 12 months that had kled to more than 40 improvement notices being issued by the WorkCover Authority. Complaints includedunquarded circular saws, unsafe electrical leads and zero protection for outdoor workers. Lincoln says the company had inflamed the situation by calling police to ensure trucks could cross the picket line this morning.
