Temple Workers in CanberraDate: 05 March 2001
The eight Indian temple workers who were last week discovered working on a Couth Coast site for just $45 per month are in Canberra today seeking a meeting with Immigration Minister Phillip Ruddock. The workers, accompanied by officials from the Construction, Forestry, Energy and Mining Union, are seeking the meeting to show the Minister a human face of his Department's failure to properly administer the working visa system. The workers will ask the Minister to honour contract they came here on and prosecute their employer for breaches of Australian labour laws. They are also seeking guarantess they will not be deported after standing up for their rights. The workers are expected to arrive in Canberra at 10.30am.
