Airport Unrest Far From OverDate: 27 March 2000
Ansett workers at Sydney and Canberra airport today voted to escalate industrial action if management does enter meaningful pay talks. Airport services were disrupted this morning, when Ansett customer service and cargo staff, members of the Australian Services Union, walked off the job over the company's failure to negotiate an enterprise agreement. The deadlock has arisen against the back-drop of the feared takeover of Ansett by Air New Zealand. Ansett staff this morning endorsed four key points that the company must move on: "Ansett customers need to be aware that the clock is ticking," ASU airlines organiser Ted Tamplin said. "Should Ansett not agree to these proposals members have authorised coordinated industrial action which can include bans on overtime, higher duties and stopwork meetings of varying durations," he said.
