Job cut protest at Telstra HQDate: 29 March 2000
Protest Details Telstra staff plan to take protest action at Telstra's corporate Headquarters in Melbourne tomorrow. They are protesting about the 16,000 jobs to be slashed from Telstra's workforce over the next 18 months, despite the recent announcement of a $2.2 billion ½ year profit Hundreds of Telstra staff are expected to take part in the protest by symbolically occupying the foyer at 242 Exhibition St. Stephen Jones from CPSU and Len Cooper from CEPU will lead the joint union action. "If jobs are cut, service standards will decline. We are fighting to save Australian jobs and to ensure all Australians get a decent standard of service from Telstra." said Mr Jones. Len Cooper from CEPU added, "This is the start of a important campaign. We are calling on all Australians to show that they share and support our goals. Together we need to tell the Government, who are the majority Telstra shareholder, that jobs and services are just as important as profits." For comment For background Protest Details
