FSU Campaign Against Bank ClosuresDate: 30 March 2000
Earlier today, the Finance Sector Union launched its National Campaign against bank branch closures at the closure of the Westpac Parramatta North Branch and the CBA Minto Branch. The campaign entitled "S.O.S" will take an Ambulance on tour through suburban, regional and rural NSW and Victoria protesting the closure of Branches, loss of jobs, loss of services and pressure on staff. FSU Organiser John Graham says the purpose of the campaign is to pressure the Federal Government to prevent more banking services from leaving rural and regional Australia and depriving these areas of essential financial services, as well as depriving communities of vital employment opportunities. "The Ambulance will become a travelling billboard with signage on both sides, front and back. Throughout the tour we will collect signatures on a petition to be presented to Federal Parliament," Graham says. Graham said "Over 2000 bank branches have closed resulting in over 40,000 job losses in the past decade." The SOS Ambulance tour will visit the Upper Hunter Region next week. During the rest of April and May the Ambulance will travel through Northern NSW, back through Central NSW and into Victoria.
