Overview:

The Australian Services Union SA & NT Branch is a busy office of 25 staff located in Kent Town.

The SA & NT Branch has members working in a wide range of industries including local government, white collar private sector, social and community services, call centres and energy.

The position of Finance Officer/Financial Accountant primary purpose is to manage, administer and maintain the branchs financial records.

This is a fulltime position of 37.5 hours per week. (A 45 minute lunch break accrues time for regular rostered days off.)

Job Description:

BANKING

  • Check and process daily banking
  • Reconcile Bank Statements daily
  • Manage Operating and Investment Bank Accounts
  • Responsible for Petty Cash and Change Tin

PERIODIC PAYMENTS & MEMBERSHIP

  • Process weekly, fortnightly and monthly Direct Debits
  • Process monthly Automatic Credit Card payments
  • Provide support and advice to Membership Officers
  • Investigate and resolve members telephone queries
  • Direct Debit and Credit Card Rejections
  • Contact members regarding failed transactions
  • Update membership database with relevant information regarding failed transactions

PAYROLL

  • Process fortnightly payroll using MYOB PowerPay
  • Investigate and recommend new software packages (as required)
  • Maintain Personnel records
  • Advise Management when staff increments are due
  • Process and pay monthly statutory obligations and staff payroll deductions
  • Prepare annual PAYG Summaries
  • Annual Reconciliations of Payroll Taxes, WorkCover, Wages etc

ACCOUNTING

  • Process and pay Creditors
  • Invoice Debtors and follow up outstanding debts
  • Maintain General Ledger Accounts
  • Reconcile Balance Sheet Accounts
  • End of month Journals (provisions, accruals, prepayments etc)
  • End of month Reporting
  • End of Financial Year reconciliations and reporting
  • Ensure Statutory requirements are met for Australian Industrial Registry and Australian Electoral Commission
  • Investigate and implement continual updating of systems and procedures
  • Maintain Asset register
  • Maintain Insurance and Registration of Motor Vehicles and other assets
  • Calculation and payment of FBT (Fringe Benefits Tax)
  • Preparation of quarterly BAS (Business Activity Statements)
  • Prepare Budgets (Income & Expenditure, Cost Centres and Cash Flow)
  • Provide advice on financial matters to Branch Secretary and Assistant Secretary
  • Liaise with external accountant
  • Reporting on Grant Expenditure

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Tertiary qualifications in Accounting/Finance (Degree or Diploma), and
  • Extensive industry experience
  • Previous experience in not-for-profit or trade union organisations desired , but not essential

SKILLS

  • MYOB Premier Accounting, PowerPay or similar accounting packages
  • Microsoft Office (Minimum acceptable standard) > Excel Intermediate to Advanced level > Word Basic level > Outlook Basic level > Access Basic Level desired but not essential
  • Electronic Banking (Commbiz or similar, Virtual Pos)
  • Internet
  • Understanding of Payroll legislative requirements
  • Numerical aptitude
  • Accurate Data Entry (min 45wpm)
  • Account Reconciliation skills
  • Confidentiality essential
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and work to strict deadlines
  • Understanding of GST and BAS
  • Reporting to Board of Management

Salary:

Salary will be in the range of $50,791.84 to $54,130.08 depending on skills and experience.
