Overview:

Australia's biggest blue-collar union has a proud and long history which has helped form the Australian character.

We are looking for an intelligent, pro-active research and policy officer to promote our view that AWU members are stronger together.

The primary function of this role in the new Sydney-based AWU national office will be to provide expert research and policy advice on the key issues affecting AWU members and their families.

The position will assist us to articulate an AWU position to decision makers in business and government, and help us shape and deliver the unions agenda in this new Rudd Labor era.

Job Description:

We want a policy and research officer who wants to be part of the exciting new policy opportunities now available in the current Australian environment, following the election of Rudd Labor.

That's why the position will require a strong understanding of our political processes and the economic parameters which impact on AWU industries and our union members.

We will expect you to be able to have strong communication skills to provide quality and quick expert research and policy advice which will contribute to the AWU's long term development strategies.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

  • Tertiary qualification or equivalent
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in conducting research and statistical analysis and producing specific outputs based upon that research, preferably within a national industrial environment
  • Demonstrated ability in writing research reports
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Proven ability to work within tight deadlines, and to establish day to day priorities and scheduling
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of and experience with the current Federal Industrial environment and the proposed important changes to this environment
  • Knowledge of economic and labour market trends in manufacturing, mining, construction, regional and rural industries
  • Capacity to provide policy advice and support and inform internal stakeholders.
