Overview:

Fair Wear is a consumer campaign aimed at stopping the exploitation of outworkers and sweatshop workers in the clothing industry. The campaign involves education of consumers and working creatively to engage retailers and manufacturers to take steps to end the exploitation of outworkers. While the campaign is primarily focusing on Australian based clothing production, we have commenced exploring how we might have an impact on international production for the Australian consumer market. Applicants need to demonstrate a commitment to social change and workers rights.

In NSW funding for Fair Wear is auspiced by Asian Women at Work. The position is based in Bankstown, Sydney.

Job Description:

With the assistance of the NSW Fair Wear Coalition and Fair Wear activist network, the FairWear Campaign Worker will be involved in -

Identifying campaign targets and developing policy approaches to campaigning.

Co-ordinating general campaign activities including lobbying, protests, meetings with companies, letter writing to companies and Government

Working with outworkers to support their participation in campaign activities, including identification of targets and meetings with companies

Education of consumers through public speaking to groups (including schools, community groups) and public actions highlighting the actions of clothing companies and government

Campaign resource development

Website maintenance

Informing the Fair Wear network about developments and engaging them in campaigning through email and newsletters

Communicating directly with retailers and manufacturers regarding the Homeworkers Code of Practice through letters, email and meetings.

Lobbying and liaising with Government Federal and State

Submission writing to government and others on issues affecting the clothing industry

General Campaign Maintenance including minute-taking and distribution, updating Fair Wear members on latest developments, liaising with Textile Clothing and Footwear Union and other state Fair Wear offices, maintaining and updating databases, responding to inquiries.

The campaign worker is responsible to the NSW Fair Wear Policy Group and the Asian Women at Work Co-ordinator.

A review of the job description and the performance of the appointee will be conducted after the third month of employment. Satisfactory performance following the third month review will result in a permanent appointment, subject to funding.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

Ability to work in a team environment Experience in developing action proposals Ability to clearly and sensitively communicate with a wide range of groups connected with the campaign (which includes outworkers, retailers, manufacturers, unions, churches, government officials, media and school students) Able to organise and prioritise their activities in a wide ranging work program Able to analyse the economic, political and social context in which they are campaigning.

Desired:

Previous campaign experience is preferable.
Knowledge of company codes of conduct and corporate responsibility practices a bonus.

Salary:

25 hours a week

$22.80 per hour (SACS Grade 3) Salary packaging available.
