Overview:

National strategic role

The ACTU is the peak body of the Australian union movement. It represents the interests of some 2 million working Australians. An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced person to join our team at this exciting time in our history.

Responsibilities include:

- Advice on employment and related legislation to the ACTU Officers and affiliated unions

- Research and advocacy on industrial, social and economic issues

- Negotiations with employers & other agencies and advocacy before industrial tribunals

- Submissions to governments, research papers, preparation of speeches and other publications

The successful applicant will have a strong commitment to the labour movement with relevant experience or qualifications in areas such as law, economics, workplace & social policy desirable.

Job Description:

Primary Objectives of Position

Assist affiliates to negotiate key industrial claims on behalf of their members Undertake lobbying activities on behalf of the ACTU Liaise with union and employer representatives on issues affecting the ACTUs interests Represent the ACTU before relevant Industrial Tribunals

Specific Duties

Undertake industrial projects in specific areas as required Produce material for publication Attend and address union meetings Plan organising and recruitment activities in nominated areas Represent the ACTU on consultative bodies and working parties Perform other responsibilities as required

Internal Communication Requirements

Liaison with the ACTU officers, policy and communications staff as needed

External Communication Requirements

ACTU affiliates, union secretaries/officials, members of the public and relevant employers and organisations.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

Educational Qualifications

Relevant tertiary qualification

Skills and Abilities

Commitment to and passion for the values of the ACTU and Union movement generally Experience in advocacy and negotiation Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary industrial relations issues A knowledge of state and federal industrial legislation Good oral and written communication skills Good research and analytical skills Ability to plan and prioritise work Computer literacy and keyboard skills.
