Overview:

The Australian Services Union represents administrative and professional workers in local government, energy, community services, transport, retail, finance, call centres, airlines and numerous private sector businesses.

An Organiser position is available with the South Australian and Northern Territory Branch of the Union. The position will be based in the Northern Territory either in Darwin (with our other NT based Organiser) or in Alice Springs and will start in mid January 2009.

Job Description:

The successful applicant will be responsible for organising workers in the above industries and assisting them to improve their working lives through the power of the collective. Some travel to remote communities will be required.

Applicants will need to demonstrate an ability to cover all aspects of the organising role and be prepared to undertake the different aspects of the role as required.

The objective of the position is to build power through well organised, Unionised workplaces and industries where members engage in and collectively deal with their workplace and industry issues.

Appropriate training and mentoring will be provided.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

Commitment to the Trade Union movement Demonstrated experience in modern Union organising and education theory and techniques Knowledge of the Australian industrial scene Ability to motivate and educate Union members and potential members Ability to work in accordance with planned strategies Ability to successfully plan for and facilitate worker meetings to achieve objectives Ability to successfully ask potential members to join their Union Experience in negotiation, dispute resolution and grievance handling Experience in facilitating workers involvement in collective bargaining Ability to work to deadlines Ability to work away from home Drivers licence Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Outlook.

Salary:

Starting salary will be negotiated between $48,982 - $59890 + $1500 NT allowance depending on skills and experience. A motor vehicle will also be part of the package.
