Overview:

A Communications and Campaigns Officer is required to work for the federal office of The Australian Nursing Federation. The position requires experience working in a busy campaign and communications role, and the applicant will have highly developed written and oral communication skills.

Undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications in communication, public relations, journalism or related discipline.

Nursing qualifications or a strong background in health.

Membership of a relevant trade union.

Applicants are advised to address the selection criteria and include an example of published writing (less than 1,000 words) and an example of a recent media release they have written in a previous position.

The position is 4 days a week with attractive salary and conditions.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION:

Federal Communication and Campaigns Officer

REPORTING TO:

Federal Secretary

Assistant Federal Secretary

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

ANF Appointed Staff Enterprise Agreement

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

To undertake external and internal communication activities on behalf of the Australian Nursing Federation, including planning campaigns, preparing campaign material and developing communication strategies to support the work of the Federation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications in communication, media, journalism, public relations or a related discipline Nursing qualifications or a strong background in health Membership of a relevant trade union

A demonstrated understanding of current professional and industrial issues facing nurses and the nursing profession A knowledge of communication strategy, the development of a public profile, and the planning and implementation of campaigns High level verbal and written communication skills Policy analysis and research skills The ability to exercise own initiative and work with minimal supervision Computer literacy

SELECTION CRITERIA:

A knowledge of nursing, the national health system and industrial relations Experience in public relations and communication High quality verbal and written communication skills A background in the production of effective campaign strategies and materials The ability to work within a budget The ability to set priorities and adhere to strict deadlines Computer literacy A commitment to ANFs objectives and policies A commitment to the principles of trade unionism Experience in developing good working relationships with journalists

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Develop and implement the Federations communication strategy

1.1Provide strategic direction, advice and support to the Federal Secretary, Assistant Federal Secretary, Federal Executive and Federal Council on communication issues.

1.2Develop a range of communication material suitable for print and website supporting the Federations activities, policies and objectives.

1.3Generate ideas and develop communication documents as required to support the Federations lobbying activities.

1.4Represent the Federation at key events when required.

1.5Represent the Federation on committees and working parties as required.

2.Develop and implement the Federations media strategy

2.1Monitor daily media for issues of interest to the Federation or requiring a Federation response.

2.2Provide strategic direction, advice and support to the Federal Secretary, Assistant Federal Secretary, Federal Executive and Federal Council on media issues.

2.3Generate issues on which the Federation should comment.

2.4Prepare and distribute Federation media releases.

2.5Arrange for media releases to be loaded onto Federation website.

2.6Provide background briefings to the Federal Secretary, Assistant Federal Secretary and journalists as required.

2.7Liaise with other key organisations in the development of joint media releases and press conferences when required.

2.8Monitor the response to the ANFs media releases.

2.9Develop a strong working relationship with relevant journalists, maintain media contact lists and media files.

3.Manage national campaigns on behalf of the Federation

3.1Identify opportunities for national campaigns to promote the objectives of the Federation.

3.2Develop campaign plans for identified or requested national campaigns.

3.3Develop campaign material for identified or requested national campaigns.

3.4Develop a campaign budget when necessary.

3.5Manage the implementation of the Federations national campaigns coordinating with the ANF Branches when necessary.

3.6Evaluate and report on the achievement or otherwise of campaign objectives.

4.Manage ANF material on the ACTU Worksite website

4.1Update material on ACTU Worksite website on a regular basis.

4.2Regularly liaise with ACTU Worksite staff.

4.3Evaluate and provide reports on the usage of the ACTU Worksite website.

5.Participate as a member of the Federal Office team

5.1Function effectively within the organisational and team.

5.2Promote and contribute to team unity and harmony.

5.3Contribute to the development of a learning environment.

5.4Support team members to achieve objectives in areas of individual responsibility.

5.5Foster team cohesiveness.

5.6Establish and maintain effective workplace relationships.

5.7Participate in orientation of new staff.

5.8Maintain confidentiality.

5.9Comply with privacy requirements and legislation.

6.Provide a quality service

6.1Participate in planned evaluation of identified activities, determine required action and report on same.

6.2Participate in research activities to continuously improve service delivery.

7.Improve own professional knowledge and skill relevant to the position

7.1Maintain a current and future oriented national and international perspective on contemporary nursing and related health issues.

7.2Attend relevant professional development activities, seminars, conferences and courses.

7.3Access appropriate journals and articles.

7.4Maintain professional affiliations.

7.5Participate in an annual progress review.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

At least 3-5 years working in a communications role. A degree or post graduate qualification in communications or journalism.
