The AMWU has an exciting opportunity for a media professional to join our national communications team.

The AMWU believes that a communication strategy of the highest professional standard is an essential part of campaigning for manufacturing workers - on everyday workplace issues as well as the broader challenges of climate change, globalisation and work/life balance.

Job Description:

The AMWU is seeking an enthusiastic communications officer to join our National communications team.

The opening is an excellent opportunity for a creative person with an interest in the union movement or political campaigning looking to start a career in media and communications.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • write and edit news stories/content for online and print news;
  • manage the unions e-communications including website, Twitter, YouTube etc;
  • prepare communications material for recruitment, bargaining and national campaigns; and
  • assist the communications co-ordinator and media officer with media events, research and other tasks as required.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

A demonstrated enthusiasm for new media and ability to write engaging content for online and print.

The successful applicant will be independent and motivated with, or studying towards, tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, writing, public relations or similar.

A commitment to the cause of organised labour and progressive values are essential.

Desired:

Some experience with graphic design programs including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop;

Experience or interest in photography/film-making; knowledge of FinalCut Pro or web design processes is an advantage.

Salary:

The AMWU offers attractive working conditions including a monthly rostered-day-off, 10% superannuation and income protection. The communications officer will be provided with an iPhone/Blackberry, laptop and mobile internet access if required. Travel will be required on occasion.

Salary level will be commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience.
