Overview:

Bargaining advocates are deployed as required, in line with CPSU priorities, to provide assistance in the negotiation of enterprise agreements in a variety of agencies and environments. Bargaining Advocates are members of the Wages and Conditions Unit and work is focused on providing assistance to operational teams in negotiating enterprise agreements, providing technical advice and high level advocacy support.

Depending on their level of expertise and technical knowledge and the level of demand by users, an advocate may also be identified as a subject matter expert in a particular field or be utilized as a first point of technical contact for organisers and lead organisers in a particular operational team.

We are seeking advocates to be based in Canberra or Sydney. Both Permanent and 12 months acting/temporary positions are available.

Job Description:

Key Tasks and responsibilities:

Negotiate or assist in bargaining negotiations in context of CPSU policy and overall bargaining strategy.

Prepare claims or assist in preparation of claims.

Report to the responsible team leader on the progress and outcomes of negotiations.

Report regularly to the Director WCU or delegate, including on identifying trends and/or progress on identified CPSU bargaining priorities.

Record keeping/note taking on progress and outcomes of negotiations.

Check team communications on negotiations for accuracy.

Provide technical advice and advocacy on general industrial matters as necessary.

Undertake projects and other tasks, as assigned from time to time, to a high standard.

Key reporting lines

Bargaining advocates work as part of the Wages and Conditions Unit and will report to the Director WCU or delegate.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

Skills and Knowledge:

1.Negotiate to deliver union policy and strategy in enterprise agreements using strong knowledge of the federal industrial relations system and enterprise bargaining.
2.Recognise organising opportunities that arise from negotiations and identify them to the responsible team/campaign leader 3.Develop and work to a plan for the conduct of negotiations as a whole, or for a particular session of negotiations.

Communication:

4.Use excellent listening, verbal and interpersonal skills.
5.Display excellent writing skills will need to write agreements, letters, reports and analyse written documents and to take clear and accurate notes to record the progress and outcomes of negotiations.
6.Deal professionally with diverse groups of people, including members, non members, delegates, employers, union staff and union officials.

Background:

7.Demonstrated bargaining and advocacy experience is essential.
8.Knowledge of the public sector and experience dealing with and understanding public sector processes is a significant advantage

9.A demonstrated commitment to trade unionism and its values is required.

10.All WCU staff are expected to demonstrate the following behaviours:

Bargaining advocates will work:

To the CPSUs bargaining strategy and be accountable for conducting negotiations in line with CPSU policy.
As part of a bargaining campaign team directed by a team leader/union official/director.
Changeable hours and will be required from time to time to travel interstate to attend meetings and negotiations.

Salary:

$75,414 - $84,412 (including Organiser Expense Allowance paid as salary) + 14% superannuation
