Overview:

The CPSUs Agenda for Change identifies the building of political power as essential to the winning of our members agenda for rights at work, quality jobs, the central role of the public sector and union renewal.

The role of the National Political Coordinator is to work with the CPSU Executive to co-ordinate the development of, and implement, strategies to build institutional and electoral influence to achieve the objectives of the CPSUs plan.

This is a new position providing an exciting opportunity to drive a modern and effective political strategy with a major, progressive trade union deeply engaged with Government.

Job Description:

The National Political Coordinator will, in consultation with the relevant CPSU Executive member and Director, co-ordinate the development and implementation of the national political campaign strategy through:

Political agenda

Developing an annual political agenda for the ACT Government, NT Government and the Commonwealth government and proposals to achieve that agenda.

Building CPSU ALP capacity in each State/Territory Build the capacity of the CPSU to have a strong political voice in the Australian Labor Party as a nationally affiliated union.

Campaign capacity building

Coordinate CPSUs election and marginal seat campaign program.

Coordinate the involvement of union delegates, workplace leaders and honorary officials in CPSUs political program.

Work with all areas of the union to enhance their role in political campaigning capacity.

Assist in implementation of an internal political education program of union officials, staff, union delegates and political activists.

The National Political Co-ordinator will work:

To the CPSUs political strategy and be accountable for conducting their work in line with CPSU policy.

As part of a team directed by a team leader/union official/director.

Changeable hours and will be required from time to time to travel interstate and attend out of work hours meetings and events.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

Essential:

1.Demonstrated commitment to trade unionism and its values.
2.A deep knowledge of the Australian political system, the history, structure and directions of the ALP, and its relationship with the trade union movement 3.Highly developed verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with senior political figures 4.Ability to conduct successful organising campaigns and to lead, motivate and develop a team of organisers, workplace leaders or political activists 5.The ability to work to deadlines and under pressure, good organisational skills.
6.The ability to work both in a team and independently, be flexible and exercise initiative.

7.Previous experience in political campaigning is highly desirable.
8.Deal professionally with diverse groups of people, including members, non members, delegates, employers, union staff and union officials.
9.A proficiency in MS Windows, MS Office and the ability to be trained in the use of other computer applications.

Salary:

$75,414 - $84,412 (including Organiser Expense Allowance paid as salary) + 14% superannuation
