Overview:

This is an exciting, senior role in the CPSU. The CPSU has a national political structure with only national officials being directly elected by all members. State secretaries are appointed by the National Secretary.

CPSU is a modern, creative union with a positive vision for our industries through our Agenda for Change. Our biggest challenge over 2010-11 is finding a Better Way to Bargain and moving towards common pay and conditions for 160,000 employees across Federal Government, together with dealing with changes in the public sector, telecommunications and broadcasting industries.

Job Description:

The primary function of this position is to provide the regional leadership necessary to build worker power through the union and CPSU influence in the community.

As the representative of the National Secretary in the Region the SA Regional Secretary will:

1.Represent CPSU in SA Unions, strategic community, media and political forums and as an affiliated union with the ALP.

2.Manage the day to day operations of the Regional office, manage and develop organisers and staff in conjunction with Lead Organisers.

3.Actively support the development of union honorary leaders, workplace delegates and activists and building effective workplace union structures.

4.Work with national officials and Lead Organisers to implement organising plans in SA and provide leadership and support in implementing whole of union organising plans and campaign activities such as Federal Election or industry wide campaigning.

5.Attend meetings of the Executive Committee and Governing Council to assist as required and in particular to provide an informed state/regional perspective to the union strategic planning process.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

Selection Criteria - required skills, knowledge and ability:

Essential:

1.Support for the political direction of the CPSU (as a progressive union, affiliated to the ALP).

2.Understanding of the CPSU (including our key industries in the public sector, telecommunications and broadcasting).

3.Capacity to build effective relationships (including with national officials, senior staff, honoraries and externally with other unions and the ALP).

4.Capacity to lead staff (including, leading, managing and developing staff in achieving key outcomes).

5.Demonstrated success in achieving union outcomes (including growth, delegate development, member involvement and industrial/political gains).

6.Strong communication skills (including capacity to speak with groups, to engage and move/convince people).

7.Self-motivated, (including strong work ethic, able to work autonomously, exercise initiative, be flexible).

The successful candidate will have a development program agreed with the National Secretary for their transition into the role. The current SA Regional Secretary will work from Adelaide and be available to provide on site support for transition into the role.

Interstate travel to attend CPSU Executive Committee and Governing Council meetings is required. There is some out of hours work attending delegate meetings, union and labor meetings.

Suitable internal and external applicants will be considered. Relocation assistance will be provided if the successful candidate is located interstate.

$88,643 pa (+14% super)
