The role of the Organiser (Metropolitan) is:
To recruit, retain and activate union members.
To promote membership awareness of, and involvement in, the formulation and implementation of the unions objectives with a particular emphasis on effective interaction with members at sub-branch and regional levels.
To activate formal union structures at the sub-branch and regional levels.
To respond to the requirements of members for information and assistance relating to all aspects of their employment by telephone, fax, e-mail, mail, interview and workplace visits.
To participate, when required, in the formulation, case preparation, negotiation and advocacy of the unions claims and individual member cases.
To engage in the resolution of disputes and grievances.
To be actively involved in the unions industrial campaigns.
To maintain up-to-date knowledge and resource materials pertaining to all aspects of members employment.
To assume responsibility for areas of specialisation.
To participate in the development and presentation of membership education activities.
To establish and maintain liaison with employer representatives and with education and industrial groups or organisations, where appropriate.
To assist with the preparation of union publicity of educational and industrial matters.
To provide information, analysis, advice and support to Union Committees, Branch Executive and Union Councils, as required.
To identify emerging issues of concern which require further action and to bring them to the attention of Leadership.
To visit workplaces regularly.
Undertake other duties as required by the Branch Secretary.
