Overview:

About LHMU Victoria: LHMU is a union of workers building industry and political power to win real change in workplaces, industries and people's lives. LHMU members work in childcare, security, cleaning, hospitality, manufacturing and ambulance.

The Journalist is part of LHMU Victoria's Media and Communications Unit. This unit produces internal member-focused communications and external campaign strategy, research and communications for our industry-wide campaigns.

Location: North Melbourne

Job Description:

The Journalist will report to the Media and Communications Officer and will:

  • Write media releases, and liaise/build relationships with journalists to get stories out
  • Write public communications for campaigns, including leaflets, campaign web copy and e-newsletters to campaign supporters.
  • Write op-ed articles and speeches
  • Contribute content for the main LHMU website

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

The successful applicant must have:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • A degree or other qualification in journalism or communications
  • A demonstrated commitment to campaigning for justice
  • Ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple projects
  • Ability to work long and unpredictable hours
  • Ability to frame issues for different audiences, including the media

Desired:

The following skills are preferred but not required:

  • Research skills
  • Ability to talk with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Basic layout using In Design/Photoshop/Illustrator
  • Photography, video and video editing skills are a bonus.
