Overview:

The Queensland Council of Unions is seeking applicants for the position of Safe Work OHS Trainer/Consultant.

The Organisation

Safe Work was established in 1990 to provide relevant and up to date occupational health and safety training. Safe Work operates two modern training rooms at its central location in South Brisbane. The College also conducts in-house training courses in workplaces throughout Queensland and the Northern Territory.

SafeWork is a Standing Committee of the Queensland Council of Unions and has its own Administrative Committee, which reports through the Queensland Council of Unions Executive.

Job Description:

The Role

This position is primarily a training position, but also provides an advisory role to course participants and the union movement more broadly.

To assume this role you must be appointed by the General Secretary of the Queensland Council of Unions in line with the QCU Recruitment Policy. You will report to the General Secretary via the Assistant General Secretary on any matters to do with your role. On a day to day basis you are accountable to the Training Manager of SafeWork or in their absence the Assistant General Secretary. Performance Appraisals will be carried out on an annual basis by the Assistant General Secretary in consultation with the Executive Officer of Safework and reported on to the General Secretary.

The Function

As OHS Trainer/Consultant, you will:

  • Assist in the development of OHS training courses
  • Ensure that the specific training courses are up to date in relation to the Queensland and National OHS legislation and standards at all times
  • Assist with the Preparation training materials
  • Deliver training courses according to the accreditation criteria and achievement of the best possible outcomes as required
  • Deliver Training to regional or remote areas, including driving, as required
  • Mentor colleagues
  • Promoting our training courses at all levels to gain the best possible student participation rate.

At times:

  • Identify and develop training needs/requirements of Affiliates on health and safety for their membership
  • Provide strategic planning advice for unions in the development of OHS Initiatives
  • Provide advice on health and safety matters for unions and their members
  • Assist Affiliates with their organising program by identifying and developing opportunities to use OHS
  • Develop and co-ordinate state-wide campaigns on behalf of the QCU in order to implement national ACTU Campaigns.
  • Assist with the co-ordination and planning of OHS related events such as Workers' Memorial Day, Workplace Health and Safety Representative Conference, and or Forums.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

Performance in this role requires:

  • Demonstrated Training experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation
  • Demonstrated experience in training materials development
  • Proven ability of high level of written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated computer skills at a basic level
  • Proven ability to deliver high quality and timely advice and output
  • Flexibility to rearrange priorities to meet changing needs of organisation
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with various stakeholders.

Desired:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • Accredited Workplace Health and Safety Officer; or Certificate IV in OH&S or other recognized health and safety qualification
  • Highly developed communication skills
  • Previously demonstrated initiative and motivation
  • Demonstrated desire and ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • High level of commitment to the Trade Union and Labour movement and be a member of their relevant union.
