Overview:

The United Firefighters' Union of Victoria works to represent over 2700 Firefighters -this position support the advancement of all industrial, political and social standing of its members.

Appointment to the position will be a full time appointment with a three month probationary period.

The position is located in inner city Melbourne. Some interstate travel may be required.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities;

The Industrial Officer-Research will work to:

1. Provide specialist advisory services to the Union through the development of oral and written submissions, briefings and reports on contemporary industrial and fire industry issues;

2. Monitor trends and developments in firefighting and industrial relations within Victoria, and analysing and reporting on the implications of these for Victorian Firefighters;

3. Provide advice on complex employee and industrial relations issues including:

  • bargaining
  • industrial disputes
  • discrimination in employment
  • workplace health and safety
  • superannuation
  • work cover
  • work and family
  • equal opportunity.

Duties:

1. Providing high level research and analysis of issues relevant to firefighters and their union;

2. Preparing reports and briefing papers for the Branch Secretary and Branch Committee of Management on a range of issues relating to State and Federal Industrial and other relevant legislation;

3. Providing advice and support to members on a variety of issues and processes, including the production of regular Industrial Updates;

4. Develop and maintain industrial/research database.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

  • Ability to research and present high quality submissions and reports
  • The ability to represent the UFU in a range of forums and high level negotiations;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment as the situation determines.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills.

  • industrial and research skills including case preparation and presentation to various tribunals;
  • knowledge of industrial relations law and practice
