Overview:

The Queensland Services Branch of the Australian Services Union (ASU) is a union with 14,500+ members employed in diverse industries including Local Government, Social and Community Services (SACS), Energy, Rail and Ports.

The ASU is seeking applications for the Brisbane based position of Lead Negotiator - ($79 462 87 609 p/a). The full position description is attached.

Job Description:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

As directed by the Branch Secretary and/or the Assistant Branch Secretary:

(a) Co-ordinate enterprise bargaining on an Industry wide basis and develop the unions responses by maintaining continuity across the industries and the implementation of strategies to protect and advance members interests.

(b) Lead and coordinate the whole negotiation process and bargaining campaigns at major employers across the state. ( this may include industrial action)

(c) Work with The lead Organiser and the Organisers to set and achieve targets for campaigns.

(d) Regularly communication with ASU members and Organisers on industry workplace and enterprise bargaining matters, which affect their workplace, or operations and provide advice to the organising team.

(e) Represent ASU/QSU interests in discussions and negotiations with employers and other interest groups to ensure consistent and considered outcomes.

(f) Develop and deliver appropriate training to staff and members on enterprise bargaining and related IR issues, which may be required to better, manage enterprise bargaining across the union.

(g) Assist in developing and implementing of strategic plans for the ASU.

(h) Assist the Preparation of journals on a Bi-annual basis, or as required. Assist in the compilation of journal articles, newsletters, bulletins and media releases.

(i) Prepare assigned reports prior to Branch Executive meetings.

(j) Such other tasks as directed that supports or enhances the objectives and responsibilities of the position.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

SELECTION CRITERIA:

High level of skill in negotiation of enterprise agreements or similar instruments and the coordination of union resources.

Demonstrated ability to apply Human Resources functions within the workplace.

High level of skill in the provision of advice, training on Industrial Relations issues (including workplace change and enterprise bargaining) to ASU members and organisers.

High level of skill in written and oral communication.

Sound level of skill in the preparation and presentation of cases before the Industrial Relations Commission/s.

High level of skill in:

  • Exercising initiative and independent judgment
  • Analysing and resolving problems
  • The operation of computer systems
  • Extensive knowledge of the Industrial Relations processes, current issues practices and policies for the assigned area and the Industrial Relations system
  • Substantial knowledge of relevant employment legislation, relevant awards, enterprise agreements and local agreement for the assigned area.
  • Ability to operate as a member of a team. Commitment to the principles of unionism.
