Overview:

The Australian Institute of Marine and Power Engineers seeks applications from people interested in employment as a National Organiser based in our West Australian Office in Palmyra. This is an important new growth position, immediately reporting to the WA Branch Secretary and accountable via the Federal Secretary, to the Federal President.

Job Description:

The job will include the following duties:

  • Regular ship visits and travel to workplaces in WA;
  • Handling of member inquiries and grievances;
  • Dealing with industrial disputes;
  • Representing the union as required, including appearing in industrial tribunals;
  • Reporting to the union and drafting of journal articles as required;
  • Negotiation of collective agreements.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

The successful applicant will be an energetic and enthusiastic person who is self-motivated and prepared to meet a wide range of challenges.

Demonstrated commitment to the trade union movement is an asset

Well developed written and verbal communication skills are required

Possession of a drivers licence is required.

NOTE: Applicants will need to obtain a Maritime Security Identification Card involving clearance by ASIO and AFP.

Desired:

Applicants are particularly encouraged from either of the following backgrounds:-

(A) A qualified INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS practitioner with familiarity with the Federal and/or WA industrial relations system. Successful completion of tertiary studies in industrial relations and/or industrial law is highly desirable. Relevant experience will be considered. Knowledge of the maritime industry is helpful.

OR

(B) A member or ex-member of AIMPE with substantial working experience in the maritime industry and the ability to interpret Awards & Agreements, pursue membership issues and learn the intricacies of the State and Federal industrial relations legislation.
