Overview:

The United Firefighters Union Vic Branch represents over 2700 Firefighters and Firefighting Industry staff across Victoria including in the CFA and MFB.

UFU Industrial staff work in Melbourne and across Victoria towards the advancement of the industrial, political and social standing of UFU members.

The UFU membership rate is extremely high and members work in a workplace where their reliance on each other is obviously extremely important.

Job Description:

If successful, you will be seeking to lift the working lives of Victorian Firefighting Industry Staff by:

1.Providing support and advice to members at meetings with the employers, at FWA or in the workplace, on a wide variety of issues and processes including grievance and disciplinary processes.

2.Keeping regular contact with Union delegates and Officials regarding a variety of matters including workplace change, Union campaigns and employer campaigns.

3.Negotiating with members employers/managers across Victoria, seeking to find resolutions to workplace disputes and negotiating outcomes involving multiple stakeholders.

4.Conducting some research and providing advice internally at the UFU, on industrial relations issues including but not limited to:

a.Bargaining

b.Industrial disputes

c.Discrimination

d.Workplace health and safety

5.Participating with UFU staff, delegates and members in preparing and running strategic industrial disputes and campaigns.

6.Preparing correspondence, submissions, reports and membership bulletins in relation to all of the matters above.

7.Reporting to the UFU Industrial Manager and Secretary, and working closely with the UFU Vic Branch Industrial and Administrative staff, as well as collaborating with the National Office and other Branch personnel.

Whilst the above points cover some of the main roles of Industrial staff at the UFU, the role of Industrial Staff at the UFU can cover a wide spectrum of work. The Union engages in a range of different forums, and is always looking for new ways to tackle problems and work towards fairer and better working lives for Firefighting Industry staff.

The position will be a full time appointment with a three month probationary period, located in inner city Melbourne with some travel across Victoria and interstate.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

Experience working in the Industrial Relations field, and a good understanding and experience in the processes and practices of Industrial Relations.

Experience and strong skills in communicating with employers and the ability to prepare and present a persuasive case.

Experience in the preparation of high quality written submissions and reports.

The ability to find resolutions to workplace disputes including to negotiate outcomes involving a range of different stakeholders.

The ability to focus and work under pressure.

The ability to prioritise work and stay organised, and to work in conjunction with other staff or members/delegates.

Good computer skills.

A commitment to Union principles and values and a determination to make a difference to the working lives of members.

Current Drivers License

Desired:

Additional work experience in, or a strong understanding of specific fields including, occupational health and safety, firefighting, superannuation, workcover, legal practice, or any other Industrial Relations related field.

Extensive experience in preparing cases for and presenting arguments to various forums, including FWA, AIRC or other similar bodies.

Qualifications in an Industrial Relations related field.
