Overview:

The United Firefighters Union Branch of Tasmania (UFUTAS) represents the industrial and political interests of around 350 professional firefighters in Tasmania. It is vitally concerned with the health and safety, training and welfare of its members.

UFUTAS is currently seeking a full-time senior industrial officer to provide leadership and specialist advice on a range of industrial relations, employment, management-related issues, programs and initiatives relevant to the UFUTAS, working to protect the interests of members.

The successful applicant will also provide representation, case preparation and advocacy in relevant State and Federal tribunals, courts and other review forums to members on behalf of the UFUTAS.

Job Description:

Primary Duties:

Interpret, advise and assist UFUTAS members in relation to the interpretation and application of awards, agreements,legislation and policies relevant to industrial relations and employment matters. This includes guidance, support, advice and representation of members in relation to work related grievances.

Initiate. develop and advise on relevant industrial relations policies, strategies and initiatives consistent with contemporary industrial relations principles and strategies of the UFUTAS, actively contributing and guiding the overall strategic policy and direction of the UFUTAS and ensuring the UFUTAS is kept up to date with relevant issues both on a national and international platform.

Research, analyse, assess and progress industrial relations and management-related issues and policies consistent with the strategic direction of the UFUTAS.

Progress industrial claims, including enterprise bargaining in negotiation with all relevant parties, such as members, employers, employer associations, ensuring communication channels remain clear, concise and open at all times during such processes.

Preparation of complex submissions required for the delivery of advocacy and representative services before review organisations at industrial tribunals and other forums including the Tasmanian Industrial Commission, Fair Work Australis and disciplinary tribunals on behalf of members and/or the UFUTAS.

Occasionally accompany UFUTAS representatives at state and national level at committees and conferences.

Participate in media interviews, including the preparation of branch media releases as required.

Provide specialist industrial advice to the Branch Committee of Management (BCOM) on a broad range of industrial relations, employment, management related issues, programs and initiatives that contribute to protecting the interest of the members.

Undertake and manage designated projects as required, including programs/initiatives, and regular reporting to the BCOM.

Develop a strong working relationship with the BCOM, UFU workplace representatives and members as well as assist in promoting a team environment within the UFUTAS.

Regular liaison with the Federal Branch developing a strong working relationship with other branches and networking as appropriate.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

Current unrestricted driver's license.

Experience in industrial relations, such as a union organiser, lead organiser or industrial/research officer.

A Bachelors Degree in law or business or other relevant tertiary qualification.

$82,274 to $87,285 + car + phone

Direction/Supervision Received:

Being self-motivated to achieve set targets is an essential compontent of the position. Guidance and direction will be provided by the Secretary. While the incumbent reports directly to and is acountable to the Secretary, the incumbent is expected to work independently exercising initiative.

The full time position, with a three to six month probationary period, is located in Hobart in a smoke-free office environment. Working hours are 40 hours per week (28.25 days recreation leave as settlement of 38 hour week claim) Monday to Friday 8:45am - 5:15pm. Notwithstanding this the Tasmania Fire Service operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Flexibility is essential and the need to work outside of standard office hours in a time off in lieu situation is required. The working environment is largely office-based, however significant intrastate and occasional interstate travel is required in order to represent the UFUTAS at various forums, in particular to provide strategic leadership and advice at a national level.
