- Identify key economic trends with a direct bearing on the current performance of and the future prospects for industries employing AWU members;
- Respond to issues in a timely manner in order to ensure the AWU effectively engages in national debates of priority concern to members;
- Draft submissions on behalf of the AWU and to participate in national inquiries on major issues relevant to the future livelihood of members;
- Advise on key economic reforms with a direct bearing on the interests of AWU members including wages policy, the implementation of the carbon price mechanism and minerals resource rent tax, the future for manufacturing industry, the response to the multispeed economy and capacity constraints posed by the energy and resources boom;
- Advise on the situation and outlook for local and international economies;
- Advise on the situation and outlook for industries represented by the AWU including the energy and resources sector, steel and aluminium industries, agriculture and aviation;
- Participate in Government committees with union, industry and government representatives;
- Work collaboratively with other unions and to lead campaigns on particular issues such as local procurement and future prospects for local industry in the transition to a lower carbon economy; and
- Work constructively with AWU communications, growth and IR teams.
