Overview:

To provide a strategic leadership and organising role within a defined geographical area in accordance with the HACSU priorities, objectives and campaigns.

The position is for 12 months and will have responsibility for organising within the Government and Non Government Disability Sector.

Job Description:

Scope of Position The Health and Community Services Union (HACSU) is an industry based Union with its membership base in the psychiatric, alcohol and drug, and disability industries in both public and private sector.

The Union is a discrete branch of the Health Services Union of Australia.

The Organiser has responsibility for maintaining and building membership levels, union influence and representative structures and provide training to activists and potential activists within a defined geographical area. Organisers will also be responsible for advocacy in relation workplace restructuring, and individual representation.

The Organiser will work as part of a team covering the State and will contribute to the strategic growth of the Union and its membership.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

Key Selection Criteria:

• Holds a current drivers licence

• Demonstrated leadership qualities, reflective of the Union environment

• A proven ability to capitalise on and contribute to change and innovation

• Commitment to the underlying principles of the union movement, social justice, community development and equity

• Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans

• Highly developed communication, analytical, problem solving and dispute resolution skills

• Well developed advocacy skills

• Knowledge and understanding of the Disability sector

• Demonstrated decision making and time management skills

• Excellent presentation, public speaking and interpersonal skills

• Computer skills, including Microsoft windows, word, internet and e-mail.

Desired:

The duties include:

• Providing information and support to members for individual grievances and issues,

• Providing information and support to members in relation to workplace issues,

• Advocacy and representation of members in a range of forums,

• Representation of members during negotiations,

• Case management,

• Identification, development and implementation of organising plans,

• Participation in campaigns aimed at building the strength and capacity in the workplace.

This role is an integral component of identifying organising opportunities throughout the State along with identifying recruitment possibilities and educational needs.

The role will offer a supportive environment with formal and informal training.
