Overview:

The Australian Fair Trade and Investment Network (AFTINET) is a network of community groups and individuals which campaigns for a more equitable, open and accountable trade system, based on international labour rights and environmental standards, and to ensure that trade agreements do not reduce the ability of governments to regulate in the public interest (see www.aftinet.org.au ).

The position is part-time for 3-4 days per week, on a fixed-term contract, with ongoing employment dependent on funding. The salary is paid part-time pro rata on an annual rate of $54,600 plus 9% superannuation.

The trade justice campaigner organizes community education and advocacy on the social impacts of trade agreements, including the proposed Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement and PACER-plus agreements. The impact of existing trade agreements will also be monitored.

Job Description:

The trade justice campaigner:

• organises meetings of the AFTINET working group, keeps AFTINET membership records and liaises with members;

• updates relevant material on the AFTINET website;

• produces regular AFTINET bulletins;

• conducts community education on trade justice issues;

• assists in preparing written policy submissions to government or other bodies;

• liaises with staff of relevant government agencies, community organisations and other stakeholders;

• assists in identifying and pursuing funding for future work;

• takes account of EEO, OHS and cultural diversity in the performance of duties.

Experience & Qualifications
Essential:

The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate:

• commitment to human rights and trade justice principles;

• excellent written and verbal communication skills;

• skills in policy research, and ability to represent agreed policy positions;

• skills in consultation with community groups and membership-based organisations;

• experience in advocacy and campaigning;

• knowledge of political and government structures and policy processes;

• understanding of trade agreements, Australia's trade policy and how they relate to human rights and social policy issues;

• proven ability to work with limited supervision as part of a team and an ability to meet deadlines;

• ability and experience in using word processing, website and database packages;

• commitment and capacity to implement EEO, OHS and cultural diversity practices.
